WHAT IS IT?
The India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is a landmark deal aimed at liberalising trade in goods, services, and investment between the two economies. The agreement eliminates tariffs on a significant share of goods, boosts service sector opportunities, and creates a framework for increased mobility and collaboration between the partners.
WHY IT MATTERS:
The India–EU FTA is monumental because it links two of the world’s largest economies, representing 25% of global GDP and 2 billion people.
This deal unlocks enormous trade opportunities, paving the way for long-term economic growth, competitive pricing, and robust job creation across both regions.
EXPORT BOOST FOR INDIA:
With the agreement, over 99% of Indian exports by value will benefit from reduced tariffs or enter the EU tariff-free. Key sectors, including textiles, apparel, footwear, gems, and jewellery, are set for a boost in exports, strengthening India’s global trading position.
WHAT INDIA GETS:
India gains significant tariff reductions on 96.6% of EU goods, benefiting sectors such as automotive, wine, machinery, and pharmaceuticals. These reductions lead to lower consumer prices and open up opportunities for Indian businesses to access high-quality European goods.
IMPACT ON CONSUMERS:
Consumers in India will see reduced prices on a wide range of European products, including wine, cars, medicines, and luxury items. The reduction of tariffs boosts consumer choices and fosters competition, leading to affordable, high-quality European products.
SERVICES & PROFESSIONALS:
The FTA also expands market access for Indian professionals, particularly in IT, education, and financial services. Mobility provisions make it easier for skilled workers to travel between India and the EU, enhancing opportunities for professional growth and market access.
WHY NOW?
Trade between India and the EU in 2024-25 reached USD 136.54 billion for goods, with services adding another USD 83.10 billion. This agreement strengthens the foundation laid by existing trade relations, creating immense potential for growth across industries.
STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE:
This agreement reinforces India’s role as a global player, supports its “Make in India” initiative, and provides unparalleled market access to the EU’s high-tech industries. It also creates opportunities for MSMEs, youth, and artisans, expanding India’s presence in global value chains.
FUTURE LOOK:
The FTA is set to accelerate trade by reducing tariffs, boosting market access for services, and fostering cross-border mobility. By 2032, India is expected to double its exports to the EU, solidifying its role as a key partner in the global economy.
WRAP:
The India–EU FTA isn’t just a trade deal; it’s a significant step towards reshaping economic partnerships in a post-pandemic world. It sets the stage for inclusive growth, job creation, and deepened cooperation between India and the European Union for years to come.
